What to expect and who’s eligible for NDIS Independent Living Options

Are you longing to connect with others and enjoy a safe and supportive, independent lifestyle? Do you yearn to be in control of your own life and to become a more independent person?

It is possible!

There are local service providers available to help you live your best life. Caring people who have the expertise to help you develop the skills you need so you can live more independently. Plus, the knowledge to help you plan and find the best specialist disability accommodation in Logan most suited to you while providing independent living options with ongoing support.

Who’s Eligible For Disability Accommodation and Independent Living Options?

Independent Living Option (ILO) is for people with high functional impairment or with higher support needs, who need some level of help at home all the time. This means you need a significant amount of ongoing support throughout every day, including overnight support.

If that is you, or your loved one, you may be eligible for disability accommodation and independent living option assistance through the NDIS. You will need to complete the Home & Living Support Request form as that helps the NDIS to better understand all of your daily living support needs.

The following functions will be assessed to determine your individual needs:

  • Your Mobility – can you walk, climb stairs, get in and out of a bed or a chair, carry or move items, and get out of the house and into the community.
  • Your Self-care – are you able to wash yourself, use the toilet, get dressed, eat, drink, speak and take medication.
  • Your Self-management – are you able to do housework, follow routines, make friends and relationships, maintain boundaries and manage your behaviour.

Either you, or a person acting on your behalf, can complete the form. The NDIA will review your request and be in touch if they need any more information and to let you know the outcome of the request and your next steps. The information you give is used to identify appropriate home and living support that will help you achieve your goals towards independent living.

What does Independent Living Option (ILO) funds cover?

NDIS funding for independent living options can’t be used to pay rent or general expenses like groceries, however it may provide funding for the following:

  • Support so that you can explore different housing options.
  • Support to help you develop daily life skills for independence.
  • Modifications or assistive technology to make your current home more accessible.
  • Support and help to complete day-to-day tasks.
  • Specialised supports for care and accommodation for people with very complex needs.

What to expect with Simply Better Care’s Independent Living Option (ILO) services

Below is an outline of the process you can expect when seeking out ILO services with us. This process generally takes 1 to 2 weeks, however please note that it can be longer for complex care needs.

  • To start, we will meet with you (the participant), their advocate, family members and/or an authorised representative in person.
  • During our meeting, we will listen to and come to understand the support and care needs you need.
  • After our meeting, we get started by collating all the care related support information from health and allied health professionals.
  • With this information on hand, we then provide you with an overview of the Simply Better Care support team, their skills, capabilities and experience.
  • Your feedback then helps us to better understand your preferences.
  • We will demonstrate how we can cater for your care needs, and introduce you to your support team members(s) if requested.
  • We make sure to have a good understanding of your budget requirements and then develop and present your personal care plan.
  • We present the paperwork, explain it verbally and obtain an agreement.
  • Finally we agree on the next review date of the care plan.

What are the main skills needed to live independently?

There are certain life skills we all need in order to live a life that is well-managed and beneficial to our personal wellbeing and those around us. Our Home care team can help you develop those skills and provide assistance with daily life activities and routines such as:

  • Food preparation (meal planning, cooking and good nutrition)
  • Money management (budgeting and handling money)
  • Domestic skills (laundry and house cleaning)
  • Personal care (dressing, grooming, hygiene)
  • Personal organisation (making and attending appointments, time management)
  • General social skills (friendships and relating with others)

Once you’ve discovered if you’re eligible for independent living option services, it’s time to look at what skills you have and what skills you want to improve upon. Simply Better Care can work through this with you and then provide the support you will need to build those daily living skills and help you live the most self-managed life possible.

With kind and caring support you can achieve fantastic results and gain confidence in your daily life!

Can adults with intellectual disability develop life and social skills?

Many people with disabilities (and their carers) can feel overwhelmed with the prospect of change or stepping outside of their comfort zone. Learning new things and meeting new people can be a big challenge. But it is important to remember that these experiences can build confidence and help develop a positive attitude.

Sometimes, learning even the smallest skill or task is the small step needed in order to have the confidence to take the next step towards positive change.

We have found that the best way to develop the long-term skills needed is through small steps towards smaller goals, which over time amount to successfully achieving bigger goals. The care team at Simply Better Care are here to help you identify your goals and take those first steps that may seem daunting.

Learning even the smallest skill or task is often the small step needed in order to have the confidence to take the next step towards positive change.

A number of our team members have experience working with and helping clients who have mental health concerns and are mentally disabled. Not only do we have the skills and experience needed to help our clients develop the life and social skills they seek, but we actually care about our clients, each one an individual who deserves kindness and care, and a simply better life.

How can ILO enrich my day to day life?

One thing that sets us apart from many NDIS providers, is that we create opportunities for our clients to meet up, to go on outings and join in local gatherings. One of our favourite initiatives are our pizza and music nights just for our clients. We do this, because developing life and social skills is not only for the aim of creating a more independent lifestyle. It also helps you to have fun in your day-to-day living. Building these skills can mean taking up new hobbies, making new friends and being in control of your own life, in turn contributing to a more meaningful and enjoyable life.
